According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), there are more than 1 million registered internally displaced people (IDP) in Ukraine. The largest numbers of IDPs have been taken in by Kharkiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Luhansk oblasts. About one third of the IDPs are children, 14% are elterly and people with disabilities; approximately two thirds of the adult IDP population are women.
People who have fled from the conflict and do not have relatives or friends to go to, have been accommodated to collective centres that have been established in dormitories, youth camps and even hospitals. With the beginning of winter the living conditions in many of these centres have become difficult since many buildings lack proper heating and sanitation. Also, during the past weeks, need for warm blankets and warm winter clothes has increased sharply. The situation has been further aggrevated by rising food and fuel prices, leading to wide-spread dependency on outside help.
In addition to internally displaced people, a further 600 000 people have left the country, most of them to Russian Federation. About 5.2 million people still live in regions affected by the conflict.
